Why Resin Bound Surfaces Are a Great Choice for Patios and Paths
When it comes to patios and garden paths, the surface you choose matters more than most people realise. It needs to handle wet weather, look good year-round and not become a maintenance headache. Resin bound surfacing ticks all of those boxes, and it is something we install regularly across Plymouth and the surrounding area
.
What is resin bound surfacing?
Resin bound is made by mixing natural stone aggregate with a UV-stable resin, then laying it over a prepared base to create a smooth, seamless finish. Every stone is fully coated before the mix is poured and levelled, which is what gives it that clean, uniform appearance. It is not the same as resin bond, where loose chippings are scattered on top of a resin base and can move underfoot. Resin bound is a solid, bonded surface throughout.
It handles water properly
One of the most practical advantages for a patio or path is drainage. Resin bound is 100% permeable and complies with SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) regulations, meaning rainwater drains straight through rather than pooling or running off onto flowerbeds and neighbouring ground. The material can drain up to 560 litres of water per minute, per square metre. For anyone who has dealt with a slippery, puddling patio in winter, this alone is a significant upgrade.

Low maintenance and long lasting
Once laid properly, resin bound requires very little upkeep. It resists weed growth, holds up against frost and does not fade over the years in the way that some other surfaces can. We use VUBA materials, which carry 30 years of UV protection as standard. Beyond an occasional brush or rinse down, it largely takes care of itself.
Plenty of choice on appearance
A resin patio or path does not have to look like everyone else’s. We work with both VUBA and Daltex aggregates, which between them offer a wide range of colours, from traditional earthy tones through to more contemporary greys and neutrals. Options include natural marble chippings for a more distinctive finish. Because the stone is mixed into the resin rather than scattered on top, the colour and texture remain consistent across the whole surface and do not fade unevenly over time.

It works with existing surfaces
Where an existing base is sound, resin can be laid directly over solid tarmac or slabs as a 20mm overlay. This makes it a cost-effective option in many cases, avoiding the need for a full dig-out and re-base. Where groundworks are needed, our team handles all of that in-house, from excavation through to final installation.
Worth doing properly
As with any surfacing work, the quality of the installation matters. There are plenty of companies offering low prices and cutting corners on materials or preparation. If you are considering a resin patio or path, it is worth looking at examples of previous work and checking that your installer uses properly tested materials from reputable manufacturers.
